I was in my studio changing the wiring on my light boxes. I had originally wired them in brown, but didn't really think much about it until my show and people kept saying things like,".... you know, you have to do something about those wires" (huh?) "....I think you should work on those wires (geez)!! So now I've changed them over to white so they blend into the walls! Kind of a boring job but it gave me time to reflect. I was thinking how important it was to establish a good working routine. Even though I was doing boring work I was in fact working in my studio, doing something that had to be done but something I didn't really deem "art", actually it was. It was something that I had to do, it was part of finishing the piece. It's kInd of like putting hangers on paintings, boring but necessary. Even though it was a mindless project it did allow me to think about my next light box I have a good idea and I can hardly wait to do it!
Establishing a routine in your studio assures that something gets done everyday. I makes working comfortable and establishes consistency which is important to a lot of artists since we are often people who go zooming off in a bunch of different directions all at once [ADD]...we are free spirits which is precisely why we need the stability. Okay I'm probably not speaking for all artists there are a large number who are disciplined, so I'm speaking to those of you who say things like, "...I can only create when the [free] spirit moves me", or "....I can't be pinned down to a schedule [I'm feeling lazy] I need my freedom".......Discipline, discipline, discipline. Establish a routine or one that gets you into the studio everyday doing something. You will notice a change in your art, your attitude and your time management (hallelujah).
